Like many parts of your body, keeping your eyes healthy is important. An annual eye exam can ensure your eyes health by helping to detect a number of eye health conditions (many of which offer no telltale symptoms) before they become something more serious.

Watch for signs of deteriorating eyesight.

Despite the good quality of your sight during youth, over time it’s common to see deterioration in the precision in which you see. Like many aspects of heath, the eye and its parts are subject to wear and tear. The way you use your eyes to see in everyday life is the most common cause of eye problems that require professional treatment.

As you get older and more focused in school and work, you demand from from your eyes to read, closely examine objects, etc… Years of over-focusing, make the once elastic quality of the lens more globular. This higher power lens gradually hardens, and by middle age it becomes fixed in place, so that it only is successful focusing on distant objects. While this is the most typical issue among adults who find they need glasses, there are many other problems that can arise with your sight that require the diagnosis of a trained professional.

If you answer yes to these questions you probably need an eye exam:

Do you experience tension around the eyes, headaches or blurred vision?

Is it difficult to read small print?

Do you have trouble reading in low light?

Is it increasingly difficult to make out street signs or words on a television?

Does your vision seem to diminish at night?

Do you experience frequent blinking?

If you answer yes to these questions you need to see an eye care specialist as soon as possible:

Is your vision blurred at times?

Do you see shadows where there are none?

Are you experiencing missing areas of vision, or diminished range of sight?

Does a grid of straight lines appear wavy, distorted or partly blank?

Are you having trouble distinguishing colors?

Does it take your eyes a long time to adjust after exposure to bright light?

Regular eye exams are about more than just helping you see. They’re about helping you see life at its best.

An eye exam can:

Ensure your prescription is up-to-date

Monitor early signs of eye disease, including glaucoma and cataracts

Help detect other health-related conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure

Tips for a good eye doctor visit:

If you already have a prescription or file from another office, bring it or have it faxed over to our office

Be as honest as possible when the optometrist is asking you questions

Explore all of your options before making any decisions

Enjoy seeing clearly!

Dr. Goulding held a private practice for 40 years in Rossford. Currently in semi-retirement, he has sold his practice & chosen to work with Van Optical on a part time basis. Dr. Goulding is a great philanthropist, giving his time and services however he can to help others. Learn more about his efforts to help others in the article recently written about a trip taken to offer eye examinations in Los Reyes, Mexico.

Sight Center Doctor Makes a Difference in Mexico

Robert C. Goulding, O.D., Sight Center Low Vision doctor, along with 25 other Lions Club members recently spent a week in Los Reyes, Mexico performing free eye examinations. the members of the local Los Reyes Lions Club served as hosts and also helped to get the word out about free eye examinations.

This year’s mission trip had the use of a Reichart Non-Contact Tonometer to test eyes for glaucoma. The Sight Center donated the instrument together with a special spring balanced table and loaned a hand-held slit-lamp to aid in diagnosis of ocular diseases.

In total, over 3,000 people received eye examinations, many of whom had never been to a doctor of any kind. In total about 4,700 pairs of recycled prescription glasses were distributed. Dr. Goulding has been a volunteer doctor on Lions Club mission trips to Mexico for the past four years.

Kim took over her family’s business in September 2007. Kim’s honest desire to be the best at what she does is what sets her and Van Optical apart.

The Van Tuinen family has been a large part of the eye industry since well before Kim’s birth. Her Grandfather owned an optical/laboratory in the 1940′s, beginning a 1/2 a century of friendly service focused on giving Toledo’s eyes the care and attention they deserve.

Kim’s father Lou opened Van Optical in 1974 & following tradition, Kim went to work with her father in 1984 as an apprentice optician. She became a licensed optician in 1987 and licensed in contact lenses in 1993.

With over a decade of optician experience, Kim left Van Optical and Toledo in 1996 to pursue a larger career. She took positions managing DOC Optical, being General Manager at Lens Crafters, Asst. Manager with EB Brown. Kim’s also worked in private practices for multiple optometrists and laser/cataract surgeons. She spent approximately 4 years traveling the US, living on both the East and West coasts, learning more about the industry throughout the country.

In 2002 Kim returned to Toledo & to Van Optical in 2005. After reuniting many she’d worked with previously at Van throughout the years, Kim purchased Van Optical in 2007. Her honesty, personality and charms are apparent at every visit to their Monroe St. store.

Kim spends her extra time with her daughter Averie & step sons Kyle & Grant.

Following family tradition and having a wonderful time, Kim invites you you come see the Van Optical difference for yourself!
